Ezekiel was the son of a priest and was in training for the office of priest in the Temple in Jerusalem when he was taken captive in 597 BC. Ezekiel was born in 622 BC, during the shining days of Judah and Josiah. In 613 BC, Ezekiel was exiled with other Jews in Babylon. He received visions from Jehovah and was chosen to prophesy to the Jews living near the River Chebar. He was 30 years old when he was called to be a prophet of the Lord to the exiles in Babylon. He was married, but his wife died at the time of the fall of Jerusalem. (See Ezekiel 24:18). However, the invasion was not enough to thwart God's plan for Ezekiel. It was in the midst of pain, destruction, slavery, anguish, and death that the Lord raised him up as a prophetic voice in his generation. Ezekiel is one of the prophets whose calling and ministry occurred during one of the most difficult periods in Israel's history. It was when Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, took the inhabitants of Israel and Judah captive. The Prophet's Vision. In his initial vision, Ezekiel notices a violent wind from the north, along with a mass of clouds and a shimmering fire. From within it come four winged living creatures, with the faces of a man, a lion, a bull, and an eagle. Their appearance is like burning coals, and each is accompanied, as it were, by a wheel within a wheel of fearsome height, with crankshafts full of eyes. They move in any direction in constant unity. Above the heads of the living creatures is a likeness of an expanse, and above the expanse, a throne on which is "the appearance of the likeness of the glory of God."
