[Brother Han Chan-ho’s Salvation Testimony] Lord, who shattered my 20 years of stubbornness! Looking back, it is dizzying. Thank you. March 22, 2026 (Sunday) Wonju Church All-Service Group / Volunteer Group Brother Han Chan-ho 20 Years: The Illusion of Salvation and Wandering Created by Familiarity I have spent nearly 20 years within the church, starting from my early twenties. From Seongnam Church in Gyeonggi-do, through Dongdaemun and Siheung, to my current Wonju Church, the church has been like air in my life. The summer retreat at Sokcho Church, which I attended during my leave as a Private First Class in 2007 after enlisting in the military in 2006, was a time I believed to be the root of my faith. When I heard the message at the time that "Jesus has forgiven all my sins—past, present, and future," I decided to "believe" it. And I believed without a doubt that this intellectual assent was salvation itself. However, it was not a living life, but a "religious custom" that had hardened over time. Wearing those 20 years like a medal, I lived my life taking pride in the fact that my biblical knowledge and experience attending countless gatherings were proof of my salvation. Now in my early 40s, my faith felt like a solid fortress that no one could touch. Shaking Pride: "Brother, that may not be salvation." After transferring to Wonju Church and as I fellowshipped with the brothers, my faith faced a major challenge. I strongly pushed back against their firm admonition that "you may not have received salvation yet." I could not bear the feeling that my 20 years were being negated in an instant. I desperately defended the legitimacy of my salvation based on my biblical knowledge and my years of church life. Even when I stayed up all night debating with the young adult brothers at a sauna, my heart was filled with arrogance, thinking, "I have been in the church for 20 years; what do you know to judge me?" I rejected their words by presenting my own common-sense evidence and absolutely refused to admit that my faith was wrong. Now that I am in my early 40s, my faith felt like a solid fortress that no one could touch. The Mirror Called Mother: "What I Was Holding On To Was a Lifeless Shell" Then, last August, I heard the news that my parents, who attend Dongdaemun Church, had received salvation. I used to drive my company car to their home for a meal once a week, and each time, I asked my mother how she had obtained the assurance of salvation. As a senior of 20 years, I also harbored an arrogant desire to verify her faith. However, the answer that came from my mother's lips was a shock that shook my soul to its very core. "I was saved simply by listening to the Word and believing in what God has done." This short confession of my mother was exactly the same—word for word—as the logic I had put forward to defend myself against the counsel of my fellow believers. At that moment, I was engulfed in indescribable bewilderment. The reason I was shocked by my mother's answer was clear. It was because I realized that my "confession of salvation," which I had prided myself on having built up the depth of my faith over 20 years, was no different from the "vague affirmation" of a new believer who had just encountered the Word. If what I possessed had been true life, I should have felt a sense of incompleteness in my mother’s vague answer or been able to explain deeper spiritual principles. However, as I listened to her response, I painfully realized, "Ah, that is exactly the level of what I had said to my brothers." Through the mirror of my mother, I came to see objectively that the shield I had wielded for twenty years, believing it to be salvation, was in fact nothing more than a list of lifeless knowledge. It was the moment it became clear that the phrase "I believe in what God has done" was not a transformation of the soul for me, but merely "intellectual assent"—accepting an undeniable proposition. Perhaps realizing how futile all the merits of faith and knowledge I had accumulated were, I could offer no answer in the face of my mother’s confession. It was the moment I acknowledged that only God’s compassion could save me. The Pastor’s Firm Discernment: "Emotions Can Be a Deception of the Devil" Having faced my true self through my mother, I finally laid my soul before the pastor. I exp...
