My target audience includes experimentalist with zero background of DFT, as well as theoreticians who wish to learn more about how to make DFT more relevant to real-life applications. This tutorial, "Part 1: The very basics", gives a brief historical overview of DFT and its role in revolutionising material science and chemistry. I will (1) demonstrate DFT's success stories via several highly cited, and also recent, papers; (2) explain what DFT is capable of offering to experimentalists.
