The reign of Sultan Alaaddin Keykubad, known to the Seljuks as "The Great Keykubad," marked the Seljuk period of greatest power and marked the reign of Sultan Alaaddin Keykubad, a period of significant conquests, agreements, and power. Alaiye, Erzincan, Ahlat, and Urfa were annexed to the Seljuk lands, while in the east, the struggle against Khwarazmshah Celaleddin and then the Mongols began. As the Mongol army commander Genghis Khan and his successor Ögedei advanced towards Anatolia, the death of Süleyman Şah, who drowned in the Euphrates River, and the subsequent rise of Ertuğrul Gazi to the Kayı dynasty ushered in a series of significant events that would change the course of history. Alaaddin, the Great Keykubad, organized his state effectively against the Mongols, and despite the Mongols and Seljuks being on the border for nearly a decade, no border violations occurred.
