The "Unstable" Weapon of World War Two — And Why Paratroopers Carried It Anyway
The Gammon bomb was designed by a civil engineer. Not a weapons designer, not an ordnance specialist — a civil engineer named John Stanislaw Gammon who had built infrastructure across India before the war and who applied the same logic to a grenade that he had applied to construction: use the simplest materials, design for the conditions that actually exist, and make it adaptable enough that the man using it can solve the problem in front of him rather than the problem someone assumed he would face. The result was a fabric bag, a metal fuze housing, and an elasticized neck. Empty, it weighed almost nothing. Filled to capacity with Nobel eight oh eight plastic explosive, it could destroy a tank. On September the eighteenth, nineteen forty-four, Major Peter Waddy of B Company, Third Parachute Battalion, dropped one through the open turret hatch of a Mk Four Panzer from a second-floor window in Arnhem. The tank was destroyed. Waddy was killed by a mortar blast later that same afternoon. He is buried at Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery.
