The verb "to be" is one of the most common verbs in English, and we use it in many different ways. Your choice between "was" or "were" depends on the subject. We use "was" for the subjects "I" and "3rd Person Singular (He/She/It). We use "were" for the subjects "You", "We" and "They". Most commonly we use the past simple of the verb "to be" in the past simple verb tense, the past continuous verb tense and the passive voice.
