Mestre Pastinha e sua história - Capoeira Angola - Pastinha! Uma vida pela Capoeira 1998 - Histórico

“Capoeira is today the sport of life” – Mestre Pastinha (1889–1981). A poet of Capoeira, Vicente Ferreira Pastinha, also known as the “Guardian of Capoeira Angola”, since in the late 1930s he was entrusted by the old guard with the mission of defending traditional Capoeira Angola from the changes introduced to increase its efficiency “as a fight.” Thanks to Pastinha and his disciples, Capoeira Angola — this extraordinary Afro-Brazilian art of fight and dance, both mandingueira and lethal, which stands among the finest and most sophisticated cultural creations of our country — is alive and remains the “novelty” within Capoeira today; the renewal of Capoeira through the rediscovery of its deepest origins and roots. In this documentary, filmed in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and New York, and illustrated with photographs by David Zingg and Pierre Verger, along with drawings by Mestre Pastinha himself, director Antonio Carlos Muricy (student of Mestre Neco Pelourinho, Rio de Janeiro) narrates the trajectory of one of the most important capoeiristas in Brazil’s history. The result of five years of work, this film offers a rare opportunity to explore the foundations and history of the legendary Capoeira Angola and its greatest master, Pastinha.
