Rural Fire Service trains next generation of firefighters in cadet program
Sky News Australia offers a look into the NSW Rural Fire Service’s junior cadet program which is preparing the next generation of firefighters. The young cadets are part of a special program for year nine and ten students. It gives them an insight into fire safety and prevention while developing practical life skills. The after-school sessions have been running across fire stations in the state for over eight years. “Parents are loving it – they say the kids are always raving about it when they get home and they’re looking forward to coming back,” Appin Rural Fire Station Captain Darren Rolfe told Sky News Australia. “All the guys and girls have learnt how to change a tyre off a car, check fluids, we do first aid, we learn mapping – just a lot of skills you’re not always taught at home or at school.”
