Genesis 32:24-32 24 Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. 25 When he saw that he could not prevail against Jacob, he struck Jacob’s hip joint, and Jacob’s hip joint was dislocated as he wrestled with the man. 26 He said, “Let me go, for daybreak is breaking.” Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” 27 The man said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.” 28 He said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have wrestled with God and with men and have prevailed.” 29 Jacob asked, “Tell me your name.” The man said, “Why do you ask my name?” And there he blessed Jacob. 30 So Jacob named the place Peniel, saying, “I have seen God face to face, and my life has been preserved.” 31 As he passed Peniel, the sun rose. He limped because of his thigh. 32 The man struck the tendon of Jacob’s hip joint, so the Israelites do not eat the tendon of the hip joint to this day.
