My Paddle Board Blew UP!!
Can an inflatable paddle board blow up on a hot beach? We're in British Columbia on the shores of Kootenay Lake during the infamous heat dome of 2021. It's hot, hot, hot. In this video we attempt to answer that question by leaving a couple Hala paddle boards in the sun during the dangerously hot "heat dome" of 2021. We're in British Columbia on the shores of Kootenay Lake. It's hot, hot, hot. Using the Hala Carbon Straight Up and Hala Hoss inflated to the recommended pressure of 15psi, we will leave the boards to back on the beach all day as temperatures sore above 50 degrees Celsius on the sand (over 120F). What will happen? As suspected, the slow rise of temperature during the does affect the pressure inside the board but not by much . In fact, it's only about 1psi. Within the first hour the boards went from 15psi to about 16psi. That's not enough to rupture a Hala board. (Check out Hala paddle boards here: https://halagear.com/?ref=SUPPAUL I receive a small affiliate commission when you buy gear.) However, the pressure does drop fairly quickly when you put warm boards on cold water. The dramatic change in temperature lowers the pressure more than 2psi in only a few minutes. Keep that in mind when paddling cold rivers and lakes. It's not a bad idea to inflate your board a little more than 15psi in anticipation of the drop in pressure. YES, boards can blow up when left in the hot sun, on a beach, in storage, transporting over alpine passes. I have witnessed it first at events where people overinflate their boards or are using cheaply made gear. Hala paddle boards are built well with industry leading standards. The PVC is bomber. The factory welded seems are solid. And the woven drop stitching holding everything together is unparalleled. These allow for the boards to be as rigid as necessary at 15psi. Other boards that require you to inflate to 18psi or 22psi just to start can come dangerously close to rupture with an increase in pressure. And cheaper boards with cheap material are already a couple of steps closer to the landfill before you even start inflating. This makes Hala one of the best brand of boards to adventure with. Take them on whitewater, take them on expeditions, take them to the beach. You are good. However, keep in mind that UV is the ultimate killer. Keeping your gear in the shade will help prevent premature aging. That goes for your boards, and especially for you paddles. NEVER leave your carbon or fiberglass paddles in direct sun. Period.
