Dmytro Khomych Palamarchuk (August 21, 1914, Ivangorod, now Khrystynivskyi district of Cherkasy region - November 15, 1998) - Ukrainian translator, poet. Member of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine since 1966. UPA soldier. In 1937, his father Khomy Palamarchuk was shot in Uman prison as an "enemy of the people". When the German-Soviet war began, Dmytro served in a tank unit. He was soon surrounded and captured, but he managed to escape. He then fought for an independent Ukraine in the ranks of the OUN - UPA. He had to serve time in both Romanian and German prisons. He was ransomed from the first by OUN members, and from the second he was helped to escape by the German Emmanuel Gelfrich, with whom Dmytro studied in Odessa before the war. From November 1943 to July 1944 he was in the ranks of the UPA in southern Volhynia. Pseudonyms "Andriychuk", "Lyman". He worked as a proofreader in the district propaganda office of the "Bohun" military district. He was captured by the Soviets and sentenced to 10 years. In 1948 he was brought to a concentration camp in Inta. He was in the camp until 1954. He worked in a mine. In the camp, Palamarchuk met Hryhoriy Kochur, a poet and translator, a man of encyclopedic knowledge, as well as many highly educated people. In the camp, Palamarchuk took up translations. He studied French with the former German ambassador to Italy, English with the grandson of Mykola Tereshchenko, a sugar manufacturer and patron of the arts. At night, the prisoners, exhausted by hard work, slept in the barracks, and Palamarchuk translated Shakespeare's sonnets. Returning to Ukraine, Palamarchuk first lived in Bohuslav, with his wife's parents, and then, thanks to the help of Maksym Rylsky, settled in Irpen, not far from his camp brother Hryhoriy Kochur, and continued his translation work. Dmytro Palamarchuk was also a good artist. He translated into Ukrainian: all the sonnets of William Shakespeare (published in 1966); poetry by Valery Bryusov, Maksym Tank, Hlebka, Adam Mickiewicz, Tuvim, Franz Prešeren, Heine, Heredia, Petrarch, Byron; novels by H.G. Wells ("War of the Worlds", "The Island of Doctor Moreau"), Gustave Flaubert ("Salambous", "Education of the Senses"), Anatole France, François Mauriac, Stendhal ("The Monastery of Parma"), Honoré de Balzac ("Lost Illusions"), Jules Verne ("Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea"). In 1990 he received the Maxim Rylsky Prize for the best literary translation of works of world literature. The street in Irpen, where the translator and poet Dmytro Palamarchuk lived, is named after him. His son Volodymyr, my friend, who participated in the local resistance movement against the occupiers during the Russian invasion, still lives in that house.
