"Pon tu bandera": fiscalizan el correcto embanderamiento en Cercado de Lima (1/2)
This month, as we celebrate our national pride, we should not only look forward to the events planned to commemorate our Independence, but also, as citizens, demonstrate our civic duty and patriotism by displaying our National Flag. This is an action that is not always respected, and doing so carries a financial penalty. BEWARE OF FINES If you reside or have your business in downtown Lima and have not displayed your National Flag, the fine will be S/1,375. If you live in the surrounding areas of Cercado de Lima and do not have a flag, the penalty is S/550. Furthermore, if you have displayed your flag improperly, incorrectly, or in a similar manner, the fine increases to S/5,500. Mariella Falla, manager of inspection and citizen security for the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima, reported that they are currently verifying the display of flags at businesses in Cercado de Lima, now that the awareness campaign has ended. She indicated that they will be very strict to ensure proper flag display throughout the Cercado de Lima district. She added that flags in poor condition will be subject to the corresponding penalty: “Displaying a flag in poor condition is an affront to our identity and civic pride, and also goes against the municipal guidelines that have been working on awareness and information campaigns until yesterday,” the inspection manager emphasized, adding that the inspections will continue until the end of July. Another case that drew attention was a business with two flags. Although Falla stated that the business will not be penalized, it will receive a warning because the regulation stipulates only one flag per property, business, or entity. WHERE SHOULD THE FLAG BE DISPLAYED? The inspection manager indicated that one flag should be displayed per property, located in the upper center of the building. She added that flags with the coat of arms should only be flown at public institutions, while flags without the coat of arms are displayed at private institutions and residences. Falla noted that the regulation was 90% followed last year and it is hoped that full compliance will be achieved this year: “Beyond the financial penalty, let us comply with the regulations as a matter of civic duty, identity, and in commemoration of the 205th anniversary of our Independence,” the official recommended.
