17. The Scorn and Dignity of the Diamond Sutra "It is said that if a virtuous man or woman upholds and recites this Sutra yet is subjected to contempt and mistreatment by others, this person would rightfully fall into the evil paths due to the karmic sins of a past life; however, by accepting the contempt and mistreatment of people in this life, the karmic sins of the past life are immediately extinguished, and one eventually attains Anuttara Samyak Sambodhi. What is the meaning of this?" "For example, a person who has not yet met a great spiritual teacher commits only evil deeds, and because their pure original mind is covered by the ignorance of the three poisons and cannot manifest, suffering arises from being scorned and mistreated by others. Accepting the scorn and mistreatment of people in this life means that by making a vow today to seek the Buddha-path, all ignorance is completely eradicated and the three poisons do not arise; thus, the original mind is clearly revealed, there are no more confused thoughts, and all evil vanishes forever. Consequently, one comes to accept the scorn and mistreatment of people in this life just as they are. Once accepted, all ignorance disappears and confused thoughts do not arise; since one is naturally liberated, it is said that one ought to attain Bodhi. Thus, the time of making the vow is referred to as this life, not another lifetime." 18. The Five Eyes of the Tathāgata "Also, what are the five eyes of the Tathāgata?" "Seeing the purity of form is the physical eye; seeing the purity of the essence of form is the heavenly eye; finely distinguishing all boundaries of form, and even good and evil, without being tainted or attached, and exercising self-control within that is the eye of wisdom; seeing yet seeing nothing is the eye of Dharma; and having neither seeing nor not seeing is called the eye of Buddha."
