Lost Acid Masterpiece: Skip Spence's Oar (1969)

In this episode, Tony celebrates/introduces the incredible penetrating and haunting and sometimes chilling lone wolf masterpiece, Skip Spence's Oar. Recorded entirely on his own, following a release from being jailed in New York for an attempted axe attack on a former band member. Skip Spence astonishingly wrote these songs in his head while imprisoned and recorded them alone in a Nashville studio in 1969. It is fair to say that he never regained his sanity to the levels he had while being a founding member of Jefferson Airplane, being instrumental in the founding of the QMS and at his peak, a featured member of the SF super group Moby Grape. What a way to come crashing down. This album contains harrowing episodes of despair and a looseness that borders incompetence at times.... yet it is a stalwart example that the power and greatness of music does not depend one iota on technical abilities. Over 50 years since its release, Oar shines brightly as one of the most unforgettable musical experiences ever to be experienced.
