Take a leisurely walk with me through a popular shopping area in Fukuoka, Japan. See many name brand shopping stores as well as small and unique restaurants and boutiques! Fukuoka (福岡市) is the capital city of Fukuoka Prefecture, situated on the northern shore of the Japanese island of Kyushu. It is the most populous city on the island, followed by Kitakyushu. It is the largest city and metropolitan area west of Keihanshin. The city was designated on April 1, 1972. Greater Fukuoka, with a population of 2.5 million people (2005 census), is part of the heavily industrialized Fukuoka–Kitakyushu zone. As of 2015, Fukuoka is Japan's sixth-largest city, having passed the population of Kobe. In July 2011, Fukuoka surpassed the population of Kyoto. Since the founding of Kyoto in 794, this marks the first time that a city west of the Kinki region has a larger population than Kyoto. In ancient times, however, the area near Fukuoka, the Chikushi region, was thought by some historians to have possibly been even more influential than the Yamato region. Tenjin is one of the most popular downtown areas in all of Kyushu. Throughout Tenjin, you can find brand name stores along with big appliance, department, and drug stores. In Tenjin, you will also find places of leisure. Tenjin has many parks that offer a place to take a break and enjoy the city atmosphere. You will see many people relaxing and enjoying their time outside! If you turn down an unexpected path or decide to take a small detour throughout your trip in Tenjin, you can also find pieces of Fukuoka's history. Daimyo is located in the center of Chuo Ward, right next to Tenjin. Daimyo is small but has many unique and trendy shops including big brands such as Nike, Apple, and Supreme. Daimyo also has many chic stores as well as a large number of cafés, restaurants, and bars. Just like every major city in Japan, Daimyo offers its own unique experiences.
