UK - Apprentice Boys Parade goes ahead
(10 Aug 1996) T/I: 10:38:18 Catholics in Londonderry (Derry) in Northern Ireland on Saturday (10/8) cancelled a protest rally, clearing the way for a peaceful Protestant parade. An announcement by the Bogside Residents Association, representing Catholics, was the last in a series of concessions by both Catholics and Protestants that defused a potentially explosive situation. Some of the two thousand Catholics who had been ready to demonstrate near the Potestant Apprentice Boys parade in the city centre began to move off. Others went to the city walls, leading to a standoff with police. Leaders of the Bogside Residents Association and Sinn Fein urged the Catholics to back away peacefully. The march commemorates the day three hundred years ago when thirteen apprentice boys thwarted a Catholic siege by locking the gates of the city.
