The history of El Salvador began around 12,000 years ago when the first Paleo-Indians arrived in the region. Over time, other indigenous peoples such as the Ch'orti, Lenca and Pipil dominated the region until the 15th century. In 1521, the Spanish first arrived in what is now Salvadoran territory and, after their conquest in 1525, began colonizing the region. Spanish colonists developed the production of cocoa and indigo dye in what is now El Salvador, which were the main export products of El Salvador during the colonial period. After El Salvador gained independence in 1841, coffee became the country's largest export product and the coffee industry gave rise to an oligarchy that controlled most of El Salvador's land and wealth. From 1931 onwards, El Salvador was governed by military dictatorships until the 1980s. At that time, a civil war began in El Salvador that ended in 1992, resulting in several changes in the country, which from that moment on began to suffer from crime. This problem began to be resolved with the election of Nayib Bukele in 2019, who adopted an efficient but also controversial system of fighting crime.
