This is the first episode in our MeshCore QuickStart series, where we break down everything you need to know about getting on the air with MeshCore using simple, beginner-friendly explanations. We’ll cover the different types of LoRa devices available, how they connect to your phone over Bluetooth, and what to consider before you spend your money. MeshCore uses license-free LoRa radios to send text messages completely off-grid. No cell service required. Your phone simply acts as the interface while all communication happens over radio. In this video, we cover: • What a MeshCore “companion device” is • Handheld units that pair with your phone • Stand-alone devices with screens and keyboards • Solar repeater options (and when you may need one) • NRF52 vs ESP32 battery life differences • Budget options vs premium handhelds • Waterproof card-style devices for outdoor use • How to find repeaters near you using the MeshCore map and Analyzer We also compare popular devices including the LILYGO T-Echo, ThinkNode M1, Wio Tracker L1 Pro, WisMesh Pocket, SenseCAP T1000-E, WisMesh Tag, and the T-Deck Plus running MeshOS firmware. If you live within line-of-sight of a repeater, you may only need a small companion device on a windowsill. If you’re in a wooded or hilly area, adding a solar repeater at higher elevation may dramatically improve your coverage. Every repeater deployed strengthens the network for everyone. In the next video, we’ll walk through MeshCore firmware options and how to flash your device step-by-step. This series is designed to help you get up and running quickly, whether you’re brand new to LoRa mesh networking or coming over from Meshtastic.
