In 1840, while a young Russian aristocrat traveling through Europe, Sanin arrives in Frankfurt. There, a chance event changes his destiny: he saves the life of a young Italian from a crisis, thus being introduced to his family. He meets Gemma Roselli, the daughter of the owners of an Italian confectionery, a young woman of innocent and pure beauty, an embodiment of the feminine ideal. ​ Although Gemma was already engaged to a wealthy suitor, she refuses him for Sanin. He asks for her hand in marriage, and Gemma's mother gives her consent. In order to settle in Frankfurt and invest in the Roselli family business, Sanin decides to temporarily return to Russia to sell his estate. At this moment, his happiness seems definitive and unshakable. ​On his way home to Wiesbaden, he meets his old friend, Ippolit Polozov, who offers to help him with the sale of the estate, suggesting that he turn to his wife, Maria Nikolaevna Polozova, a skilled businesswoman and, at the same time, a figure of mature beauty and cynical seduction. The meeting with Maria Nikolaevna represents the ultimate test of love and character for Sanin. ​The woman, full of experience and a magnetic sensual power, subjects Sanin to a game of manipulation and seduction. She manages to completely tear him away from Gema's pure world. For several weeks, Sanin completely forgets about his fiancée, abandoning himself to a devastating passion for Polozova, even though he does not love her. This betrayal is not just a physical infidelity, but a collapse of his ideals and morality. Finally, after Maria Nikolaevna achieves her goal of conquering and humiliating him, she leaves him. Sanin realizes the horror of his deed. He returns to Frankfurt, but no longer has the courage to confront Gemma, who, although she does not know the details, feels the rupture and disappointment. His sudden departure from Germany is the tragic end of his first great love. The radio play ends with the old Sanin, who, although rich and respected, lives his days haunted by the ghost of a lost happiness.
