Les Miserables Alfie Boes Last Ever UK Show @ The Royal Albert Hall Curtain Call | 21 June 26| 5⭐️
Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular – Grand Finale Royal Albert Hall, London | 21 June 2026 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Royal Albert Hall is one of my favourite venues and Les Misérables is my favourite musical, so returning for the final performance of the Arena Spectacular’s London residency was always going to be a special occasion. Having attended the opening performance on 18 June, it was fascinating to experience the production at opposite ends of its Royal Albert Hall run. While I still feel the opening night was the stronger performance overall, this final show came very close and provided a memorable conclusion to what has been a remarkable engagement. There was a palpable sense of occasion throughout the afternoon. Whether due to it being the final Royal Albert Hall performance or the widespread belief that this could be Alfie Boe’s final appearance as Jean Valjean, the audience seemed determined to savour every moment. I have seen Alfie Boe perform Jean Valjean several times over the years and, while he would not be my favourite performer to have played the role, this was unquestionably the best I have seen him. His performance displayed a confidence, maturity and emotional depth that elevated many of the character’s key moments. His rendition of Bring Him Home was exceptional and brought the audience to its feet in the first of two standing ovations during the performance. The second came following Javert’s suicide. Jeremy Secomb delivered the scene with tremendous intensity and conviction, creating one of the afternoon’s most memorable moments. While I personally preferred Bradley Jaden’s interpretation earlier in the run, Secomb’s performance was nevertheless one of the highlights of the show and fully deserved the audience’s response. Elsewhere, the production was as strong as ever. Samantha Barks delivered a heartfelt Fantine, Shan Ako’s On My Own was beautifully performed, and the ensemble provided the scale, power and emotion that this concert production demands. The score sounded magnificent in the Royal Albert Hall, with One Day More, Do You Hear the People Sing? and the emotional finale all receiving thunderous applause. The afternoon ended with an emotional curtain call that reflected the significance of the occasion. The applause continued long after the final note had been sung, with the audience clearly aware they had witnessed something special. As Jeremy Secomb and Alfie Boe began to leave the stage together, Secomb encouraged Boe to turn back and acknowledge the audience one final time before exiting himself. Boe appeared visibly emotional as he took that final bow and accepted the appreciation of the packed Royal Albert Hall. Whether or not this ultimately proves to be his final performance as Jean Valjean, it certainly felt like the end of an important chapter. Having been fortunate enough to attend both the first and last performances of the Royal Albert Hall run, it felt like witnessing the opening and closing chapters of a very special theatrical event. The first performance remains my favourite overall, but this final show featured the finest Jean Valjean performance I have seen from Alfie Boe and provided a fitting and deeply moving conclusion to a memorable London residency.
