Shemaya or shemaika (Latin Alburnus chalcoides) is a species of cyprinid fish from the genus bleak. The shemaya is a species of fish widely distributed in the waters of the Azov and Black Seas. Its exquisite taste has led to intensive fishing by both local and visiting fishermen over the years. This species is characterized by an elongated, laterally compressed body, reaching a length of up to 40 cm and a mass of about 300 g. The color of the upper body is dark green with a bluish tinge. The lateral line is formed by 56-74 scales. The average life expectancy is up to 12 years. The habitat covers the Black, Marmara, Azov, Caspian and Aral Seas.
