Wintersportverletzungen

Dr. Ulrich Frank, hand specialist at the Hessingpark Clinic, discusses winter sports injuries of the upper extremities, such as skier's thumb, radius fractures, and suspensory ligament (SL) fractures of the carpal bones. A distal radius fracture involves a broken radius, the main bone of the wrist. This injury usually occurs due to a fall onto the wrists. Treatment is based on diagnostic imaging. Surgery to correct the bone alignment is often necessary. A plate and screws are used in the procedure. The healing process takes approximately six weeks, after which weight-bearing exercises can begin. The plate is removed after six to nine months. Another winter sports-related hand injury is a scaphoid fracture. This involves a carpal bone. The scaphoid ligament connects the carpal bones and can also be damaged during a fall and when breaking the fall with the hands. If left untreated, this can lead to osteoarthritis in the wrist in the long term. Skier's thumb is a condition in which a tendon in the thumb is injured by hyperextension. Surgery is performed to repair the tendon. More information can be found at https://www.hessingpark-clinic.de and https://www.hpc-therapie-training.de.
