It was a dark time for Japan. A large-scale epidemic broke out in Kyoto, causing severe casualties and social unrest. Disasters were frequent during this period. In 866, Mount Fuji erupted in what remains the largest eruption to date. In 869, the Jōgan Earthquake, recorded to have a magnitude equivalent to about 8.0, struck, followed by a tsunami that swept across the Tōhoku region, causing numerous deaths and injuries. The overall environment instilled a sense of apocalyptic fear. Additionally, the Heian-kyō area was originally an inland wetland with a humid climate. The population density and inadequate sewage systems (mixing sewage with drinking water) led to widespread diseases such as malaria, smallpox, influenza, dysentery, and measles. Especially around 975, smallpox wreaked havoc, taking many lives, and casting a shadow over society. The Gion Festival's floats (called "yama" and "hoko") are one of the main highlights of the festival. They parade through city streets and have distinct differences: Hoko: Symbolizing Protection Against Calamities The top of the hoko has a central wooden pillar about 25 meters high, decorated with metal objects like swords, moons, and chrysanthemums. The hoko is filled with people playing festival music, weighing around 12 tons in total. They are supported by wheels and moved using ropes. Yama: Representing Mountain Worship Yama are divided into "hikiyama" and "kakiyama." Hikiyama resemble hoko, also with people playing music, but the top is usually decorated with pine trees. Kakiyama are smaller, weighing about 1.2 to 1.6 tons, and have a simpler shape. These floats take turns parading during the festival. There are 23 floats in the pre-festival parade and 10 in the post-festival parade, with the latter being smaller in scale. The parade order changes every year, determined by a lottery on July 2. However, nine floats do not participate in the lottery; their parade order is fixed, such as the Naginata Hoko, which always leads the procession.
