Recognising the Makers of COLORBOND® steel in Western Port

Join us in celebrating 60 Years of COLORBOND® steel! At the very beginning of 2026, our people at the continuous paint lines (CPL) in Western Port, Victoria were recognised with a BlueScope Environmental Award for replacing their CPL2 ovens and incinerator with modern equipment. The upgrade resulted in an impressive 78 per cent reduction in natural-gas consumption per tonne of painted product, a 94 per cent reduction in carbon monoxide and 18,000t CO2-e per year reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, among various other improvements. This is a fantastic story of teamwork and sustainability, so we spoke with the hardworking people at the no. 2 and no. 4 paint lines about this project and what happens more broadly at the facility in Hastings. They included Ashley Hale (Senior Process Operator), Graham Findlay (Process Operator), Matt Quince (Operations Manager) and mother-and-daughter pair Deb and Melissa Spicer (Process Operators). Together, they explained the manufacturing processes behind COLORBOND® steel and why they're proud to contribute to an iconic Australian brand that is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2026. We thank our participants for giving their time so generously on the day.
