Before you begin, make sure to visit Amazon Foot and Hand Casting Kit x 2 Great Keepsake Gift – For Babies See instructions below: Preparing the Alginate Molding Powder Step 1: Measure 560ml of cool water (65-70*F) and pour into the molding bucket. Use a thermometer to check water temperature Step 2: First set timer for 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Empty bag of alginate powder into the water. Start the timer as soon as the powder touches the water. Step 3: Stir the mixture for exactly 4 minutes and 30 seconds. While waiting the 4:30, your helper should get baby ready to insert her foot (or hand). Note: If the mixture appears to be a bit lumpy. This is okay. Once the timer has gone off, stop mixing and immediately proceed to Step 4 Step 4: Immediately insert baby’s foot (or hand) into the alginate mixture. Be careful that the foot (or hand) does not touch sides or bottom of the container. You have a few seconds to reposition the foot (or hand). Once in desired position, try to have baby remain as motionless as possible. Step 5: The mixture will set in about 1-2 minutes. Note: Cooler water takes longer to set. When mix is fully set. When mix is fully set, the alginate will feel rubbery and will not stick to your finger when you touch it. Step 6: Carefully remove baby's foot (or hand) after mix has set. Very gently wiggle baby's foot (or hand) and slowly pull up and out. Step 7: Clean mold by flushing fresh water into the mold. Be sure to drain all water out the mold. Preparing the Casting Powder Step 1: Set aside 1 tablespoon of casting powder for touch ups later. Step 2: Carefully measure 125ml of COOL water and pour into a mixing bowl. The correct water temp (65-70°) is critical. Use a thermometer. Caution: You only have 2 minutes to mix and pour all of the casting mixture before it starts to set. If water is too warm, the setting time will be shortened. Step 3: Empty the casting powder into the bowl. Start timer (2 minutes) as soon as the casting powder touches the water. Step 4: Mix the casting powder using the spoon until it has a paint-like consistency - no longer than 1 minute. If the mixture is too stiff, add water 1 tablespoon at a time to thin out. Step 5: Tip the container to a 45 degree angle. Pour 1/4 of casting mixture into the container. Rotate the container while keeping it tilted to ensure casting mixture gets into all nooks and crannies. Tap the sides and lightly smack the container bottom on a hard surface a few times to help release any trapped air bubbles. Repeat this process until the cavity is full. Step 6: Once full, continue to tap and gently shake container side to side for additional minute. Step 7: Wait for the cast to harden for a minimum of 2 hours, but no longer than 4 hours. Removing the Cast Step 1: Be VERY GENTLE, the cast is very brittle at this stage. Turn container upside down. Push and pull on the container sides to break the suction and allow the mold to slide out gently. Step 2: Work VERY slowly. Carefully peel away the mold material away from the casting. Be extra careful around details. Step 3: Once the majority of the mold material has been removed, use the sculpting tool to remove any material from recesses and crevices. Any voids left can be filled with a small amount of casting powder previously saved. Mix to paint - like texture and fill any voids. Let dry 1 hour. Step 4: Rinse casting with clean, cool water. Set aside to cure. Cure the Cast Allow the casting to cure 5 days in a well-ventilated area, otherwise black/green mold will grow. Using a fan is highly recommended. A fully cured casting will be dry and cool to the touch. Sand & Smooth After the casting has fully dried out, you can sand and smooth your casting to remove and imperfections.
