Die Trafostation

I've traveled to the countryside again for you. I was invited by the members of the Schlangen Local History Association, who kindly opened their doors to me. So today I can show you this old, historic transformer station in its original condition and explain its history in more detail: Electric power came to Schlangen in 1912 with the arrival of the tram. In 1925, this first transformer station in Schlangen was built in the cramped town center. As technological advancements led to improved, more efficient technologies, they also rendered existing ones obsolete: This station was decommissioned in 1998 – making it a piece of technological history! What's fascinating, however, is its preserved state, almost like Sleeping Beauty. Thanks to the initiative of dedicated volunteers, this striking structure and its technology have been preserved. The existing historical equipment, including a transformer (converting medium voltage to low voltage) and distribution, switching, and fuse elements in the medium- and low-voltage rooms, offers a glimpse into a piece of technological history. Information panels further document the rapid changes in the local electrical power supply. Some available space could be gradually converted for the exhibition of electrotechnical measuring instruments and objects related to energy and network technology (electricity museum). A unique architectural feature, demonstrating ingenuity, is found nowhere else in Germany: Since no suitable building site was available, the building was simply constructed over the course of the Schlänger stream. Visits are possible on International Museum Day (second Sunday in May), European Heritage Day (second Sunday in September), and on the "Schlänger Market Sunday," each in the afternoon. Visits are also possible by appointment. Location: Corner of the town center and Langetalstraße in Schlangen. Contact person: H.
