Interested in planting calla lilies? Here is the ultimate calla lily guide. In this video, we go over how to plant, grow, and harvest calla lilies. Planting Guide: Plant 4 inches deep and at least 6 inches apart (in containers). (I'm planting my rhizomes much closer than recommended.) If planting in the landscape, plant at least 12 inches apart. Plant the eye of the rhizome facing up. Water well, and you can expect to see shoots in about 2-4 weeks. In warm climates, plant in part shade. In cool climates, plant in full sun. Harvest Guide: To harvest flowers, pull the flower stems out of the plant. This gives you the longest stem length and prevents damage to the rhizome. Harvest flowers when they are fully open, but there is no pollen on the stamen. You may also harvest flowers before they open, but this can shorten the vase life. Calla Lilies can last up to two weeks in the vase. Grow Guide: Water regularly during the growing and flowering season. By mid to late summer, the leaves of the plant start drooping, turning yellow, and looking unsightly. I cut the entire plant down to the ground at this stage (forgot to mention this in the video) and given them a good water. The plant responds with new healthy leaves by fall.
