The cantata Erschallet, ihr Lieder, BWV 172 – recorded here for All of Bach with René Jacobs – must have been one of Bach’s favourite cantatas. Years after composing the cantata, he performed it on at least three other occasions. That is unusual, as Bach heard most of his cantatas just once in his lifetime. It is easy to understand why Bach wanted to perform this cantata again and again. It is a perfect Whitsun cantata, which besides giving a purely theological message is also primarily a celebration.
