História da Cidade de Passos Minas Gerais Brasil
History of the City of Passos, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The first name of what is now an important municipality in southern Minas Gerais was Capoeiras, because at that time the settlement was located within a dense thicket. The second name – Vila Formosa do Senhor Bom Jesus dos Passos – was given to the old village of Capoeiras because Ensign João Pimenta de Abreu, a devotee of Senhor Bom Jesus dos Passos, erected the first temple in this city in fulfillment of a promise, with that saint as its patron. Later the name was simplified to Passos. The first pioneers of the region were Ensign João Pimenta de Abreu and his relatives, who settled there, attracted mainly by the topography, the fertility of the soil and the existence of gold on the banks of the Rio Grande. By 1823, the village was already large, when Domingos Vieira de Souza and Joaquim Lopes da Silva built their farms, contributing powerfully to the formation of the village. Over the years, with the arrival of new miners, the settlement expanded, becoming known throughout the province of Minas Gerais as Arraial da Capoeira. By the Provision of December 11, 1835, the first chapel was elevated to the category of parish chapel, which was inaugurated on March 20, 1836, with São Bom Jesus dos Passos as its patron saint. The creation of the parish of Senhor Bom Jesus dos Passos, with the establishment of the town of Passos in 1850, is due to the immense efforts of the chaplain of Passos, Father Francisco de Paula Trindade. Continuing its rapid progress, the flourishing town was elevated to the category of city in 1858, preserving the same name.
