After an overnight stay at Tête de Lion, we continue further into the rugged Anti-Atlas. Our first stop: the famous Painted Rocks. In the middle of the desolate landscape lie gigantic rocks that were painted in the 1980s by the Belgian artist Jean Vérame. A surreal place, as if someone had left a piece of modern art in the middle of the desert. Afterwards, we drive through the impressive mountain landscape of the Anti-Atlas towards Ait Baha for a lunch stop. The further we drive, the more we get the feeling that we are entering the real Moroccan countryside. Small villages, donkeys along the road, deserted valleys, and the quiet life of Southern Morocco. Eventually, we arrive at Agadir Inoumar and the small tourist cooperative where we are warmly welcomed. We visit the centuries-old agadir — a traditional fortified granary high in the mountains — and get a unique glimpse into Berber life of the past. Afterwards, we drive on to Taroudant, often called the “little Marrakech.” We wander through the medina, visit a traditional tannery, and conclude this leg of our journey. After a month inland, we eventually head back towards the Atlantic coast… to Taghazout.
