The Asylum That Vanished 1,500 People: Northern State Hospital's Secret
Deep in the woods of Skagit County, Washington, sits the abandoned Northern State Hospital — a psychiatric institution that operated for over 60 years and quietly buried somewhere between 1,400 and 1,700 patients on its grounds, most of them under markers bearing only initials and a number. In this video, we uncover the full story: the Olmsted-designed "colony plan" campus built on optimism and fresh air, the forced sterilizations of the 1930s, the lobotomies and insulin comas of the 1940s and 50s, the overcrowded wards that once held over 2,700 people, and the mortuary attic where more than 200 cans of forgotten cremated remains sat undiscovered for a decade after the hospital closed. We also follow the modern fight to give the dead their names back — through the work of retired social worker John Horne and Carrie Davidson, great-granddaughter of patient Lillian Massie, who spent years searching for a grave the hospital never properly recorded. This is the history Northern State Hospital left behind — and the people still trying to recover it, one sunken headstone at a time. 📍 Location: Sedro-Woolley, Washington 🏥 Operated: 1911–1973/76 ⚰️ Cemetery: ~1,500 unmarked graves #NorthernStateHospital #AbandonedAsylum #WashingtonState #MentalHospitalHistory
