The Allied victory was looming. The order from Berlin was unequivocal: the deaths of millions of men, women, and children had to be hidden from the world and from the judgment of history. No one was to know the reality of the concentration and extermination camps. From Warsaw to Prague, from Hamburg to Vienna, in every administration, in every office, hundreds of thousands of reports, identification cards, and photographs went up in smoke. And in the camps, the last survivors were murdered. But the Nazis would fail to conceal their crimes. Deportees will return to recount the unspeakable. And they will bring proof! For five years, at the Mauthausen concentration camp, a handful of men will do more than just survive. They will steal this evidence. They will hide it. And they will even smuggle it out of the camp and protect it from the SS. Thanks to them, 1,000 photographs from the Mauthausen camp have survived to this day.
