CHP Deputy Group Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır addressed the Grand National Assembly. A heated debate erupted in the Assembly when AKP Deputy Group Chairman Özlem Zengin responded to Başarır's speech. In his speech, Başarır criticized the ruling party. He stated, "Look, they're going to celebrate their 25th anniversary soon; they're celebrating it by attacking and provoking." AKP Deputy Group Chairman Özlem Zengin responded, "This isn't something to be underestimated; it's extraordinary, something with very few examples in the world, almost none. Being in power continuously for twenty-five years is a very difficult feat to describe." In a part of his speech criticizing the ruling party, CHP Deputy Group Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır used the phrase, "Look, they're going to celebrate their 25th anniversary soon; they're celebrating it by attacking and provoking." Following these remarks, AKP Group Deputy Chairperson Özlem Zengin stated, "I will address Ali Mahir Bey's statement, 'They have governed the country for twenty-five years by selling off assets.' You asked, 'Will you celebrate twenty-five years?' Frankly, you should be the one who best understands how many years we have governed the country, because this is not something that happens by 'selling off assets'; it happens by gathering votes one by one. For twenty-five years, you knock on doors, you explain yourselves on television, in the markets, in the bazaars. This is not something to be underestimated; it is extraordinary, something with very few, almost no, examples in the world. Being in power continuously for twenty-five years is a very, very difficult feat to describe. If you underestimate this, I think you are underestimating the citizens who voted for us and brought us to power." Responding to Zengin's remarks, Başarır said, "The spirit of May 19, 1919, is about saving, not selling. There is attacking, there is taking, there is saving, but there is no selling. I repeat: This date is an important date, the date the National Struggle began, the date our Atatürk set foot in Samsun, the date the struggle for liberation began. I say, please, at least don't issue a decree on this date to destroy the forests and trees planted until today." "ARE PEOPLE SELLING THEIR VOTES?" Zengin, taking the floor again, said, "You can't say to the AK Party, 'You came to power by selling.' This is not just an injustice to us, but to the people of this country as well. Are people selling their votes? Why do you belittle the people of this country so much? I can't understand it. Speaking after the debate between Başarır and Zengin, Adan said regarding May 19th: "May 19th is the resurrection of a wounded giant, the birth of a nation from its ashes.
