Modernization of Peruvian Submarines The Peruvian naval shipyard SIMA began the modernization works of the four submarines Type 209/1200 of the Peruvian navy. In the Submarines, the extraction and replacement of the command and control systems will be carried out. The propulsion system of the submarine will also be updated in addition to the navigation, mechanical and electrical systems. Updates of Peruvian submarines will be carried out with the supervision of the German submarine specialist, Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. In June 2016, SIMA granted TKMS a contract of 40 million euros (approximately $ 45.44 million) to face the modernization. The German company will be involved in engineering and technical services such as cutting and welding on submarines and will put specialists at their disposal to provide local support for a period of seven years. The four submarines that will be modernized in the factories of Chipana, Angamos, Antofagasta and Pisagua, were built in the early 1980s at the shipyard Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (at that time HDW Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft GmbH) in Kiel and have been used since then by the Peruvian Navy. Peru also operates two Type 209/1100 submarines, the BAP Islay and the BAP Arica, which was modernized in 2008.
