The 'Floating Fortress' British Cruiser Whose Guns Killed German Tanks Six Miles From Sword Beach

#NavalHistory #RoyalNavy #DDay On 6 June 1944, HMS Mauritius opened fire before the first Allied troops were fully ashore. From the bombardment line off Normandy, this Crown Colony-class light cruiser used her twelve 6-inch guns to strike German batteries, suppress inland strongpoints, and break up armored counter-attacks threatening Sword Beach. Overshadowed by the famous battleships HMS Warspite and HMS Ramillies, HMS Mauritius performed the relentless medium-range fire-support work that helped keep the eastern flank of the invasion alive. As flagship of Bombarding Force D under Rear-Admiral Wilfrid Patterson, she supported the Eastern Naval Task Force through D-Day and the bitter fighting that followed. Her guns hit the Houlgate battery, supported operations east of the Orne, and later joined heavier warships in smashing German troop and tank concentrations hidden in Norman woods and villages. When the 21st Panzer Division and later SS armored formations attempted to counter-attack, Allied naval gunfire became one of the most feared weapons on the battlefield. This is the story of the “floating fortress” whose cruiser guns reached far beyond the beaches and turned naval firepower into a decisive land-battle weapon.
