Since April 1, 2025 more than 80,000 Afghan men, women and children have been pushed back across the border—often with just hours’ notice, their lives packed into pickup trucks and hand-carts. Human-rights groups call it a forced return; Islamabad says it is enforcing immigration rules. Either way, families like restaurant-owner Akber Khan, uprooted after 50 years in Peshawar, and 38-year-old Abdul Rahman, who sold his phone for bus fare, arrive in Nangarhar province exhausted and uncertain.   Every day up to 8,000 people—roughly 60 percent of them children—stream through Torkham, queuing for biometric checks before moving to makeshift camps such as Omari. UNICEF teams race to reunite separated minors (over 1,000 children helped so far this year) and provide water, food and psychosocial care, but warn that needs are outstripping resources.  The ordeal is compounded by security flare-ups: a 10-day border closure in March, sparked by clashes over a new outpost, left 5,000 aid trucks stranded and killed at least one guard, deepening Afghanistan’s hunger crisis.
