While Santa Fe de Antioquia was the true founding center of the region, Medellín grew around a key event: the construction of its first church and the organization of spiritual life under the priest Gómez de Ureña. History also holds dark episodes: the indigenous people of the Aburrá Valley chose suicide rather than submit to slavery by the conquistadors. Between Robledo, Gómez de Ureña, and other figures of the time, the social and economic life of a town that gathered around mass and the market, Sunday after Sunday, was woven. Thus, without an official act or solemn date, Medellín was born as a city of encounters and resistance, which would later become the heart of Antioquia.
