The Longevity Illustrator from the Society of Actuaries

In this video, Dale Hall, Managing Director of Research at the Society of Actuaries Research Institute, reviews the Longevity Illustrator. He explains that traditional life expectancy headlines can mislead retirement planning because they are based on life expectancy at birth rather than the realities facing retirees already in their 60s. He argues that retirement planning should focus not on “life expectancy,” which represents only a 50/50 survival midpoint, but on “life preparancy” — preparing clients financially for the possibility of living much longer than average. Hall emphasizes that longevity risk should be viewed through probability distributions and survival scenarios rather than a single age, especially for couples where at least one spouse may live well into their 90s. He highlights how the free Actuaries Longevity Illustrator tool, helps advisors and clients visualize the probability of living to advanced ages. He stresses that objective, research-based longevity insights allow financial professionals to build more resilient retirement income strategies using guarantees, lifetime income products, and other planning solutions.
