After the conquest of Tenochtitlan and its allied cities, several meetings took place between the first Franciscan friars and the wise men of the old Nahua tradition. There, the origin of the gods, theology, the authority of the Pope, and the sacred scriptures were debated. These meetings were later rewritten by Bernardino de Sahagún and come down to us as "The Dialogue of the Twelve."
