Often, stories about the August 1991 Putsch boil down to the idea that the State Emergency Committee appeared out of nowhere, some unknown individuals staged a coup, but Boris Yeltsin, supported by the people, defended the country and prevented the government from being overthrown. Meanwhile, it wasn't Yeltsin who was in power, but Gorbachev, and who was in charge becomes completely unclear.
