FLOUR POWER V: What Really Counts | NOW WE COUNT — Season of Sefira In the season of Sefirat HaOmer, Tom’s Talmud Tisch turns to Masechet Menachot. In the Flour Power mini-series, we explore the barley harvest and the Omer offering that sets the count toward Shavuot in motion. _________________________________________ In this fifth Episode "What Really Counts" on daf 66b, the Gemara examines Rabbi Akiva’s position on challah and ma’aser -- only to be challenged by Rav Sheshes, who introduces a braita about the leftover of the three se’ah. What begins as a technical discussion quickly sharpens into a fundamental question: What actually triggers obligation in halacha? Is it the defining movement of completion that designates status, or can what remains afterwards reshape the entire legal picture? As the sugya unfolds, the focus shifts to the halachic status of what’s left over from the flour prepared for the Omer offering - the premier first Beit HaMikdash grain offering - that catalyzes the count to what'e left over after the fact. Once the offering is complete does a new question emerge: what do we do with what remains? Through Rabbi Akiva’s framework and Rav Sheshes’ challenge, the Gemara reframes the discussion around surplus, significance, and legal thresholds. What appears to be a narrow debate reveals a deeper inquiry into how the Torah defines completeness -- and what role the “extra” truly plays. This process mirrors the inner avodah of Sefirat HaOmer: a step-by-step refinement, moving from Pesach toward Shavuot -- Z’man Matan Torah.
