Its name is inspired by the road that cuts through the region to the south, the Via Estrutural (DF-095). Its formation was due to an invasion of waste pickers near what was then an unregulated landfill in the Federal District, and it expanded as people who did not own their own homes or have the means to buy a property arrived. It is named after the highway, DF-095, which connects Cruzeiro to Taguatinga and passes in front of it. In total, there are 45,000 residents. Its main economic activity is commerce, spread across the main avenues (Luiz Estevão, Deputado José Edmar, and 9 de Julho) and between the city blocks. There are more than 2,000 active commercial establishments. Currently, Cidade Estrutural houses the second largest landfill in Latin America in operation, but it currently only receives construction waste classified as Class III waste (Inert; which does not have a constituent soluble or solubilized in water and which is not classified as chemically unstable and which also cannot combust: rocks, bricks, glass, certain plastics, and rubber). The landfill is approximately 55 meters high, about 17 meters taller than Christ the Redeemer (including the monument's pedestal), and occupies an area equivalent to 200 hectares.
