Hiking Pilot Mountain - The Great Guide of the North Carolina Piedmont!
Join me on my hike through Pilot Mountain State Park, North Carolina, where history, beauty, and adventure intertwine. Known to the native Saura people as "Jomeokee," the great guide, this iconic peak has been a landmark for centuries, and it's not hard to see why. The most recognizable feature of Pilot Mountain is the Big Pinnacle, a large, bare rock face that juts up significantly from the surrounding area. Of course, fans of the Andy Griffith Show will also recognize this peak as it is referenced and shown through several episodes of the show, though referred to as "Mt. Pilot". Pilot Mountain is a part of the Sauratown Mountains (along with nearby Hanging Rock), which are also known as the "mountains away from mountains" due to their distant proximity from other ranges. As you'll see in the video, Pilot Mountain is a well-loved destination for local rock climbers, and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail passes through the park (Segment 7). My hike was pretty close to a hiking tour of the park. I started at the Pinnacle Hotel Road parking area and jumped on the Mountain Trail. From there I hiked up the Grindstone Trail, then to Ledge Spring Trail where I met LOTS of climbers enjoying the day. The views from here were spectacular! I then hiked around the Big Pinnacle via the Pinnacle Knob Trail (there is no public access to the summit). The Pinnacle Knob Trail gave more fantastic views and up-close inspection of the cliffs and really cool rock formations! From here, I ventured to the Little Pinnacle Overlook, which again, presented fantastic views. Access to this section is quite easy as there is a large parking area nearby with restrooms. I took advantage of the benches around the parking area (which has great views on its own) to sit and enjoy a quick lunch before continuing on Grindstone Trail to make my way back down the mountain. I eventually joined once again with the Mountain Trail, just on the other side of the mountain than where I was previously. From here I continued back to my starting point, making for a nice 11-mile loop hike that took me right at three and a half hours to complete. It was a GORGEOUS day out on the trail! I highly recommend Pilot Mountain as a destination for campers, travelers, and hikers of nearly any skill level. ___________________________________________________________________ 👣 Trail Stats Trails Hiked: Mountain, Grindstone, Ledge Spring, Pinnacle Knob, Little Pinnacle Overlook Total Distance Hiked: 11 miles Total Elevation Gain: 1975 Total Time: 3h 30m ___________________________________________________________________ Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe to our channel for more exciting outdoor adventures! #BootsontheTrail #PilotMountain #NorthCarolina #HikingAdventures #Jomeokee #NatureLovers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 🌐 https://www.bootsonthetrail.com 🟧 / bootsonthetrail 📘 / bootsonthetrail 📧 Email: [email protected]
