This is a mega-engineering project, unprecedented in Argentina, that will involve the construction of submerged breakwaters, a type of artificial stone reef that will modify the surf system to mitigate the worrying loss of sand that has accelerated in recent years. The Buenos Aires Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Services held the tender for the protection of approximately 2,000 meters of coastal frontage, between 6th and 24th Streets, in Las Toninas. The first stage will require an investment of more than 4 billion pesos, and it has already been announced that the construction of these artificial reefs will later be replicated in Mar del Tuyú. “For 30 years, the municipality of La Costa has been seeking to alleviate the serious problem of southeastern winds that sweep away beaches and homes,” he added, “After the last terrible southeastern wind, we moved forward with a proposal to develop a submerged riprap system.” According to surveys, this coastal area lost an average of 1.3 meters of beach per year from 1985 to 2020, when the phenomenon worsened, reaching 2.5 meters of beach per year. This problem led to the collapse of some homes and prompted a bill to expropriate more than 300 endangered properties in Las Toninas, Santa Teresita, and Mar del Tuyú. “We decided to begin work to protect the nearly 2,000-meter coastline between 6th and 24th Streets, which also has the unique feature of being the area through which the seven submarine fiber optic cables enter, providing connectivity to all of Argentina. The town has been the capital of the Partido de la Costa since 1978, when it separated from the Partido de General Lavalle. Its founding date is October 24, 1945, and it was located on land purchased by Arturo de Elías from the Duhau family. On that day, the Buenos Aires Province Geodesy Directorate approved the city plans. This event was subsequently held at public auction. However, the plans were approved under Law 3487 of 1913, which did not contemplate the creation of coastal towns and did not take into account the morphological characteristics of the terrain (which includes shifting dunes).
