It has been almost three years since the Russian military blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, a disaster that flooded dozens of settlements, left thousands homeless, and dramatically changed the ecosystem of southern Ukraine. At the bottom of the former reservoir, the historic Velykyi Lug has begun to recover — with new forests, ponds, and the return of birds and wildlife. But due to constant shelling, drones, and mining, most of the area remains almost inaccessible for research.
