Laurent Tillon explains how trees affect us and shape our environment for our benefit. Laurent Tillon is a tree lover. It was near one of them that he discovered his calling for forest preservation as a teenager. He joined the French National Forestry Office (ONF) at the end of 1998 to inventory the fauna of the Rambouillet forest, primarily amphibians, insects, and bats. The storm of late 1999 swept across France and changed our perception of how forest ecosystems function: what if biodiversity could play a central role in forest management? This mantra became his guiding principle. He joined the ONF's general management team in 2005 and now leads biodiversity research and conservation efforts on a national scale. This role allowed him to defend his doctoral thesis in 2015 on the links between bats and the forest for conservation purposes, a subject in which he specialized.
