Over time, cheap housing, tourism growth, and foreign capital reshaped entire cities, while stable industrial growth and high-paying jobs failed to keep pace. Today, Spain faces a growing affordability crisis: housing has become increasingly financialized, local salaries stagnate, and many young Spaniards struggle to leave home or start families. Yet tourism, real estate, and foreign retirees now support large parts of the economy, making meaningful change politically and economically difficult. Spain may have become dependent on the very model making the country increasingly unaffordable for its own population.
