Built in sections throughout the mid-19th century, the line between Dresden and Chemnitz faced treacherous terrain. Gradients as steep as 2.6% were constructed through the valleys between Freiberg and Dresden, making for a treacherous climb and descent for rail traffic. The line has also seen many sections rebuilt over the years to account for increasing demand and congestion. The line is electrified; however, it is still served by diesel traction to connect with unelectrified lines beyond Chemnitz.
