From the pre-Islamic era, the Persians were masters of creating sumptuous gardens, reflections of Paradise on Earth according to the Zoroastrian religion. 2,500 years ago, Herodotus marveled at the qanats, the extraordinary network of underground aqueducts that made even the most arid lands cultivable by capturing groundwater. But today, what poet could find the words to describe the catastrophe facing Iran? Failing that, let us listen to the words of a politician, a former Minister of Agriculture, now in charge of the environment in the Rouhani government. According to Isa Kalantari, "Iran, with its 7,000 years of history, will no longer be habitable in 20 years if the rapid and exponential destruction of its water resources continues," adding that "the water shortage is a greater threat to Iran than the nuclear crisis, Israel, or the United States." To trace the origins of this crisis, the film follows the course of one of the country's most emblematic rivers, the Zayandeh Rud, aptly named the "River of Life," for 400 kilometers. From its mouth to its source in the Zagros Mountains, the "roof of Iran," it crosses the famous bridges of Isfahan and vast agricultural and industrial zones, undergoing countless withdrawals, dams, and diversions. Accompanied by the testimonies of Iranians on the front lines of the country's battle for water, our journey reveals its many ramifications—historical, cultural, political, and economic—and its crucial implications for the Middle East.
