They Paved a River How Army Corps D8s Turned LA Deadliest Waterway Into Concrete 1938

In March 1938 a devastating natural disaster forever altered the landscape of Southern California. A catastrophic flash flood tore through the region leaving over one hundred and fifteen people dead and forcing a radical engineering ultimatum. The wild unpredictable Los Angeles River had to be completely tamed. To achieve this unprecedented feat of urban flood control the US Army Corps of Engineers launched history most ambitious channelization project a plan to completely encase fifty-one miles of natural riverbed inside millions of tons of solid concrete. The heavy industrial burden of this monumental earthmoving operation fell entirely upon the tracks of the newly upgraded Caterpillar D8 diesel bulldozers. Operating day and night under grueling conditions these pre-war American titans battled deep alluvial mud massive hidden granite boulders and sudden winter cloudbursts to clear the path for the massive concrete pours. This documentary chronicles the true story of the veteran operators and machines that rewrote American infrastructure history.
